I have emailed Jennifer to let her know and I am posting the history of Coach creeds and serial #'s, for any person who is interested in older Coach bags and vintage Coach bags manufactured before the 1990s.

HISTORY OF COACH CREEDS & SERIAL NUMBERS. The second and third photo of the creeds/serial #’s in the ebelle Coach guide which are labeled as fake are genuine pre-90s creeds/serial #’s.
In the 1960's Coach bags had either a metal identifier tag, or simple impression of the Coach logo, no creed no serial #'s. Coach introduced the creed without any serial # sometime in the late 60's/early70s.
The word 'leatherwear' is under the word Coach and the wording of the creed at this time was all caps 'THIS IS A COACH BAG. IT IS MADE OUT OF A COMPLETELY NATURAL GLOVE TANNED COWHIDE. THE SCARS, SCRATCHES, VEINS AND WRINKLES ARE NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FULL GRAIN LEATHERS'. Under the creed is in all caps, 'MADE IN NEW YORK CITY, U.S.A.' ALL Coach bags made after the introduction of the creed and before serial #'s were introduced were made in NYC.
Note that there are gaps in the creed in the lines describing the 'scars, scratches, veins and wrinkles' When Coach added serial numbers to the creed in the 1970's they were 'all numbers' in the format 'xxx-xxxx' as shown in the second photo in the ebelle list. The last four digits do not correspond to the style number, each bag had a unique number. The particular bag shown in photo 2 on the list was made in New York City. Coach ceased making bags in NYC in the mid 70's before there was such a thing as fakes or knock offs.
NYC bags are vintage and rare. This serial number format (all numbers, xxx-xxxx) is also on bags made in the United states, after Coach began manufacturing bags in multiple locations in the USA rather than NYC (sometime in the mid to late 70s). The wording of the creed is the same, except on the bottom it will say 'MADE IN THE UNITED STATES' OR 'MADE IN U.S.A.' Again the last four digits are not the style number, and the serial #’s were unique to each bag. There are a few styles with 'MADE IN U.S.A' that have 8 in the serial number - all numbers, no dash, just a continuous string.
In the 1980's Coach changed the serial numbers to 'all numbers' in the format xxxx-xxx. An example of this in the third photo in the ebelle guide. The last three numbers do not relate to the style number, again the serial #’s were apparently unique to each bag. It was not until the 1990's that Coach introduced the modern registration format of letters and numbers, with the last four digits being the style number (or in the case of some of the newer bags after 2000, the last five digits). These registration numbers are not unique to each bag. The wording of the creed was also changed to all caps 'THIS IS A COACH BAG.
IT WAS HANDCRAFTED IN (country of origin) OF COMPLETELY NATURAL GLOVE-TANNED COWHIDE. THE VARIATIONS IN THE GRAIN ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF NATURAL FULL GRAIN LEATHER.' There are no longer gaps between any of the words. At the present time any one who reads the ebelle review here will think any bag for sale on an online auction site which was made pre 1990s and has the old serial number format, is fake, even the rare, vintage, made in New York City Bonnie Cashin designs. I this post helps Coach classics and vintage bag collectors. Nice post, interesting about the history of the creed patch. I think too much emphasis is placed on this patch though, when trying to figure out whether or not a bag is fake. There are so many other factors to look. A lot of women new to Coach just have this idea in their heads that these bags have to have a 'serial' number when a lot of them do not. Actually, none of the bags within the past 20 years have an actual serial number.

Can you help? I inherited 9 coach handbags from my grandma. 7 of them have the 'Made in NYC, USA' stamped inside. The other two say made in the united states. My grandma grew up in New York and made frequent trips back, apparently to buy purses! Hanson Owner Drivers Uk there. I was wondering how I could find more background information about the purses such as the model and what they're worth. I'm also interested in finding out if they were designed by Bonnie Cashin.

I have never heard of a bag with 'irregular' stamped inside. From what I understand, there are various stamps that are used to identify discounted bags. They are pressed into the leather of the creed patch, giving an embossed appearance. I have a very old Coach Glove Tanned Cowhide shoulder bag in natural pale tan leather that I believe dates from the early 1960's. This purse features the Great Seal of the United States embossed on the outside flap, which measures about 8' square and covers the entire front of the purse.
There are no zippers, snaps or other hardware except for the standard large square brass buckles that attach the strap on each side and the brass grommets on the strap. There is also no interior creed or serial number, just a 5/8' long black metal tag attached to the inside pocket which reads 'COACH' in gold in a lozenge. It is unlined like the Classic leather purses -- I have several of these and am sure this is authentic.
It came with a cardstock pamphlet from Coach Leatherware that talks about the leather and a cardstock hangtag about The Great Seal. Would anyone here know anything about this purse? It also needs to be cleaned (I think) or maybe not, according to the pamphlet. It looks dirty to me. I have some issues with the top post in this thread. There's nothing on the internet I can find. The dates in the top post are mostly incorrect and unfortunately they keep being repeated elsewhere. Coach stopped making bags in New York City in or a bit after 1987, NOT in the late 70s as the above post and apparently the 'ebelle guide' claim. That fact has been verified by me numerous times by checking the creed stamps on vintage bags and cross-checking the dates based on Coach's catalogs indicating when the bag style was actually in production. The late 1980s was also when Coach replaced the Made In NYC stamp with 'Made in the United States' - 1988 seems to be the year that took effect. The all-number xxxx-xxx serial number format began some time around 1989 and continued thru late 1991 or maybe early 1992, again verified by cross-checking bags with that format of serial number against their production dates as given in Coach's catalogs.
The dates are also verified in this well-researched history of the company: where the date for the opening of Coach's second plant in Miami is given as 1988 (the year NYC was removed from the creed, and also by references to Coach's NYC factory in my mid-1980s catalogs and that had vanished by 1989). The NYC factory had to close sometime between 1987 when the last of the NYC creeds seems to have been made and before 1994 when the plant codes were added to Coach serial numbers since there are no bags other than a few obvious fakes with the 'A' plant code that the NYC plant was given.
An updated and much more accurate history of Coach serial numbers and dates is available at Ebay's Guides section, under seller Salearea and written and researched by me. I hope it helps anyone needing information on dates, serial numbers and creed stampings. There are several other Guides posted there, all of them researched from scratch rather than based on, or copied from, anyone else's Guide. They don't pretend to be 'authenticity guides' giving a handful of Rules for telling if a Coach is real - that's impossible anyway, there are NO one or two or three Rules that can EVER prove a Coach is genuine including the ridiculous 'YKK zipper rule' - but they give a good background and some useful and accurate information about older Coach bags. They are no longer here, their last activity was June 21st, 2007 06:01 PM (according to their profile page). I have no idea where they got their information from. The ebelle 5 guide they are referring to is actually Bag Bliss's original name. There was a quick guide to identifying fake Coach bags, but it no longer exists. I don't believe it gave much information at all about the serial numbers, there were only pictures of some creed patches.
One of them was labeled as fake, presumably because the serial number did not follow the current format. This person was saying that this particular example was not fake, but an authentic vintage piece. The guide did not claim (from what I recall) that Coach stopped making bags in New York City in the late 1970's. What this person has written was not verified by anyone here. I personally don't know much about vintage Coach. If this information is incorrect and is being referenced elsewhere, then I apologize.
