Displaylink Drivers For Windows 10
I have an ASUS MB168B USB 3 monitor, works fine in Windows 8.1 with the ASUS EZlink software. After upgrading to Windows 10 10122 x64 I got Visual C++ debug errors and had to un install it. When I plugged my monitor in for the first time Displaylink was downloaded and installed automatically. Monitor won't work though. Windows 10 sets its resolution to 1024 x 768 and won't let me change it. If I try to set it to 1366 x768 I get a Settings could not be saved try a different resolution message. It doesn't matter what resolution I chose, I get the same message.
This monitor will not display if not set to 1366 x768, all I get is a black screen. I uninstalled display link and installed the V7.8 Beta 1 for Windows 10 from their site but same deal. Note: When upgrading to Windows 10 Anniversary Update from a previous version of Windows, you will be notified that the DisplayLink driver will be uninstalled.

So far I've found two places to change the screen resolution and get the same results in both, settings could not be saved.
This is the Windows 10 screen resolution settings. I can't even find display link in the Start Menu/Screen. It's not listed in Control Panel either. I think the beta driver I downloaded is the same one Windows Update offers up. In Windows 8.1 I have a similar issue the first time I connect the monitor. The resolution is set incorrect and its blank.

If nobody has any ideas I'll be going back to Windows 8.1.I had issues with my external monitor. The MS basic display adapter was listed in DevMgr - so the AMD driver never got installed. There was a known issue with AMD graphic cards, but Brink posted a thread saying the MS had an update (get it through WU). That update never was offered.
I ended up downloading the current AMD driver (not the beta) and installing that. I've done this before on previous 10 blds without issue. This time I didn't get the CCC context menu (right click open desktop area) or the entry in Pgms&Feats. Tried again with the chipset drivers and then Pgms&Feats had AMD.
I think this was more of a timing issue though - it might have shown up eventually. I even tried a repair from Pgms&Feats - no good. DevMgr still showed MS driver - even after a restart. Scans for HW changes did not help.
Multiple inf installs of the Monitor driver (using the HP exe and the install inf from file) did not help. I tried updating the device in DevMgr like a good boy - but I was beginning to get pissed off.
The AMD install went to C: Program Files AMD (I'm fairly certain it used to go to C: AMD) The solution? Download the AMD 14-12 driver package go through the normal install process If the monitor is still not co-operating. Update driver software for the display adapter using Dev Mgr select: Browse my computer. Browse button to the AMD folder enable/select browse subfolders press [ Next ] You might have to extract the files from the install using 7-zip. I also noticed that Settings >System >Display incorrectly identifies my monitor - it still points at the laptop LCD Control Panel Display and Dev Mgr correctly identify the 20' external Changed to only show on display 2) and display 2 is the main monitor.
The resolution slider went up to the best setting for the ext monitor Start menu icons are still blurry - but I think that's an app issue (probably padding an image - padding is more for text) My first app attempts looked similar - then I removed padding from images in the app and set them to 'fit', not fill or stretch. MS will have to solve that - I've tried a few things and haven't found anything that affects the icons on Start. So on to other things.

All I had to do was plug it in and Displaylink was installed automatically.
A couple of reboots and its all setup and running great. I'm not going to mark this thread as solved as it not. I'll just let it fade away if nobody else responds. You originally stated a C++ error so it might be necessary to update the corresponding C++ library as well. If you have 30 GB of free disk space, it's easier to dual boot than to overwrite your base OS. I've put 10 on VMs, separate partitions and VHDs.
Each have pros and cons. VMs - simple in Hyper-V or other software, but they lack real hardware tests. Hardware is emulated. Separate partition - probably the best option. You can put Win10 on a logical drive as long as the boot information is available on a primary drive.
If you use the 100 MB System Reserve partition, you can remove the drive letter for your 8.1 OS in Win10 so it is not exposed to the preview release. I haven't tried installing Win10 to an external drive yet, maybe the next drop. VHD - can be anywhere you have sufficient space, even on C: - but. Windows will not update to a VHD. You can initially install (ignoring the 'you cannot install Windows to this location'), but the next release will download and complain about installing to a VHD. Windows Updates are fine, it's just an 'upgrade' issue.
To get around that, I clean install to the VHD using either the ESDtoISO process or I use the ISO if it is available to download.
