Rihanna’s production team, Syndicated Rhythm Productions (SRP), has recruited the UWI student as an artist and songwriter, and is working on developing her career internationally. The signing occurred in March 2006, a few months after SRP’s Evan Rogers contacted Shontelle when a CiRCUIT magazine editor provided the veteran producer with Shontelle’s contact information and recommended that he get in touch. The SRP link has heightened hope that another Bajan could soon be rolling on to the international music scene.
SRP is currently developing Shontelle’s sound and direction, which Rogers describes as having ‘a female Sean-Paul vibe.’ He notes that even though her style is melodic, it has serious urban street credibility, and that the excitement surrounding the project is amazing. Although reluctant to reveal specific timelines, Rogers said that it was likely that a hot underground single would be released ‘sometime in the summer’ targeting the club scene.

Rogers hinted at the strong possibility of Shontelle working with Caribbean producers, including some from Sean Paul’s and Elephant Man’s camps. Local producers, may also get a shot at inclusion on the album.
The SRP-signed, Jamaican group J-Status, featured in Rihanna’s Music of the Sun album, has adapted Roll as the first release off their debut album. Shontelle drops a wicked verse on the J-Status version of Roll, and will appear alongside J-Status and Rihanna in the Roll music video. In the meantime, Shontelle has been keeping busy by penning verses for other local performers, and working on other collabs, including 246, a tribute by hip-hop artist Trezay to Bajan women. Shontelle says that she is thrilled with the SRP link.
“As a Bajan artist it is a very significant development for me and my music career because it is a major step towards realising a lifelong dream to take my voice, my words, my mind, my message beyond these shores to the world.”.
